Shocked as he was by it, Stalin spared no effort to repulse the invading army, helped in the end by the onset of winter. Neither of these strategic errors compares with Hitler’s catastrophic decision to rush into his invasion of Russia. This left the Allies with two territorial masses which would prove critical in the conflict, North Africa and Great Britain. Hitler would himself later regret his ‘over-generous’ treatment of both France and Great Britain: the first because he left them in control of their North African colonies the second because after brandishing the threat of invasion he chose to abandon the project, leaving the British masters of their island stronghold. We know that this mission was accomplished, but in part it was thanks to strategic errors made by their adversary. It’s clear that such ‘penetration’ prior to an assault on the ‘heart of Germany’ required first a landing on the continent. You will undertake operations directed at the heart of Germany‘. How to achieve that end? The American President was in no doubt about it and spelled it out in his briefing to Eisenhower: ‘ You will penetrate the continent of Europe. Hitler was leader and arch-strategist of the enemy which had to be crushed. Here is the first of them, surrounded by the military chiefs whose advice he was prone at times to ignore. This question serves well to launch the subject because it requires an account of every one of the protagonists in the drama which unfolded in the 1940s.
